"A Peplum Epic™" is a serial pre-title that accompanies some 20s A Difficult Age media. The phrase was added during the promotion of the album and usually appears spaced out above the title in small "Helvetica Neue Bold" font and during an opening title.
History[]
On May 26, 2017 a trailer for the 20s A Difficult Age album was released. During the trailer "A Peplum Epic" appears in front the series main protagonist Harnuphis whom is painted on a fresco. This was the first time in the lexicon of the series that the phrase was used in video form. In the trailer the "Trajan" font added to the old feel of the sword-and-sandal films of the 1960s. The phrase was added the series title but the font was later changed. A Peplum Epic was added to a movie style promotional poster to sell the album. It was placed in "Helvetica Neue Bold" font which would become the font permanently used.
In Other Media[]
Graphic novels[]
In 2018 and 2019 when both the covers for volume one and two of The Blue Madjai graphic novel were revealed, the series title did not feature the pre-title "A Peplum Epic" in the logo, instead including the graphic novel name and subtitle underneath.
In The Blue Madjai graphic novel sampler (which was laid out on R.O.T.U. World's homepage) "A Peplum Epic" appears on a single page then rolls in the opening text followed by the novel title.
Wiki[]
For this wikia the "Peplum" phrase was punned and instead the slogan "A Peplum Wiki" was used to market the wikia instead of the word "epic".
Other Uses[]
During the release of A Peplum Origin: Energy Manual by Gods, for Taurari, the phrase "A Peplum Origin" was used to substitute for "A Peplum Epic" to signify that the book was a prequel.
Etymology[]
A peplos (Greek: ὁ πέπλος) or pepla (in Latin) is a body-length garment that was established as typical attire for women in ancient Greece by 500 B.C. (the Classical period). The word "pepla" became "peplum" was later adapted and used by French film critics to neutralize the phrase "sword-and-sandal", negatively given by American critics.
A peplum also typically refers to the type of clothing the characters wore in the films. Peplum epics are usually Italian made historical or mythological epics set in mostly Greco-Roman - or a similar fictional / non-fictional periods. Modern films set in this historical backdrop are labeled as neo-peplum films.
